Buyer Advice

Before You Buy A “Bargain” Gaming PC

A cheap PC can look great with RGB lights and a smart case, but still be unsafe, slow and almost impossible to upgrade.

Here’s how to spot the traps and how Pink Parsnip Computers helps you avoid them.

Real Warranties
No SATA To PCIe Adapters Ever

We’ll tell you what’s safe to keep, what to upgrade and the most cost effective route to your goals.

Real Example: The £180 “Gaming PC”

Someone messaged us on Discord after buying this PC for £180. It boots, browses and plays Roblox, but the moment they tried to upgrade the GPU, they hit a wall.

  • Cramped case with minimal airflow and very little room for upgrades.
  • Office grade 500W PSU with no proper PCIe GPU power connectors.
  • SATA to PCIe adapter powering the GPU, which is a genuine fire risk.
  • Green OEM motherboard with proprietary quirks and limited BIOS options.
  • Stock OEM cooler not suitable for higher power CPUs.
  • Older DDR3 memory limiting performance.
  • HDD only storage causing slow boots and loading times.
  • Windows 10 with no Secure Boot or TPM support, meaning Windows 11 is unsupported and future game compatibility may be affected.

Bottom line: upgrading “a bit at a time” can mean replacing the case, PSU, motherboard, CPU, RAM, cooler, storage and then the GPU. That is not an upgrade. It is a rebuild.

Safety Warning: SATA To PCIe

A SATA plug is not designed to safely power a graphics card. If a GPU pulls more power than the cable can handle, that cable can overheat, melt or fail. Never power a GPU this way.

60 Second Checklist: Spot A Trap PC

  • Green OEM motherboard inside a “gaming” case.
  • No proper PCIe GPU power leads from the PSU.
  • SATA to PCIe adapter powering a graphics card.
  • No front intake or rear exhaust fans.
  • DDR3 memory or only a single RAM stick installed.
  • HDD only storage.
  • Windows 10 with no TPM or Secure Boot support.
  • Seller cannot confirm the exact CPU, GPU model and VRAM.

How Pink Parsnip Computers Helps

  • Free compatibility checks if you send us a photo or a part list.
  • Upgrade ready parts with branded PSUs, proper cooling and modern platforms.
  • Real warranty and burn in testing.
  • No mystery parts and no dangerous adapters.
  • Honest performance guidance with realistic FPS expectations for the games you actually play.

Safer Power 101

  • Use a PSU with proper PCIe or 12VHPWR leads.
  • Never use SATA to PCIe adapters for GPUs.
  • If your PSU does not have the right connectors, it is the wrong PSU and should be replaced.

Windows & Security

We recommend Windows 11 with TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot enabled. Unsupported installs can cause anti cheat issues, block future games and reduce security.
