Why Fortnite FPS varies so much
🎮 Performance Mode
These figures are aimed at Fortnite Performance Mode with competitive visual settings and native resolution rather than ray tracing or maximum graphics.
🧠 Your CPU Matters
At lower FPS the graphics card is often the main limitation. Once you start chasing 200, 300, 400 FPS or more, CPU performance can make an enormous difference.
📈 Expected Ranges
We deliberately use FPS ranges rather than pretending every RTX 5070 or RX 9070 XT will produce one exact number.
♻️ Refurbished GPUs
Older cards marked as refurbished GPUs are no longer models we would normally expect to source as current new retail products, but they can still offer excellent Fortnite performance when professionally tested and refurbished.
Fortnite Performance Questions
Why am I getting less FPS than the table shows?
Your graphics card is only part of the equation. CPU performance, RAM speed, background applications, temperatures, drivers, Windows settings and Fortnite updates can all affect FPS. Performance Mode becomes especially CPU dependent at very high frame rates.
Does my CPU really matter that much in Fortnite?
Yes. Fortnite Performance Mode is designed to reduce graphics load, which means the processor can become the limiting factor surprisingly quickly. This is why gaming-focused processors such as AMD's X3D CPUs can produce extremely high Fortnite frame rates.
Should I use Performance Mode or DirectX 12?
If your priority is maximum competitive FPS, Performance Mode is usually the starting point. DirectX 12 can look better and some systems, particularly certain Radeon configurations, may behave more consistently with DX12. There is no harm in testing both.
Do I need 300 or 400 FPS?
Not necessarily. Your monitor refresh rate matters. If you own a 144Hz monitor, consistently delivering around that level is far more useful than chasing a headline 500 FPS figure. Competitive players using 240Hz or 360Hz displays can benefit more from extremely high frame rates.
What monitor should I pair with my PC?
Use the monitor recommendation in the GPU table as a sensible starting point. There is little reason to pay for a very high refresh display if your system cannot produce frame rates anywhere near it.
